To upgrade my iMac 27" of late 2013

To upgrade my iMac 27" of late 2013, do I have to have it only in 8gb, 16gb or 32gb? Or for example, can I add two 8gb to the two 4gb that are already on it, which would make it 24gb? Please could anyone with experience on this technical matter let me and others know if that is the right thing to do or not, Thanks.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You can upgrade it to 24GB if you would like, that is how much my 2011 27" model has and it runs perfectly. If you upgrade the RAM please only use OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial (buy direct). The reason being is iMacs are sensitive to off brand or cheap RAM. Both OWC and Crucial sell very high quality RAM at reasonable prices and have impeccable service.

Adding my vote to rkaufmann's--Kingston Value RAM has been at the heart of serious Mac problems in these forums since 2006 when Apple changed to Intel processors. They make two lines of RAM. The standard line seems to work with intel Macs but is very hard to find. RAM is so price-sensitive that resellers almost never stock it. They stock the Value RAM instead, not for performance of compatibility but for increasing their profits margins.

Value RAM appears to have a "V" in the second from left position of the RAM model number: example--KVR24N17D8/16

Other RAM brands singled out here by problem reports are Corsair and PNY. When those brands were replaced by Crucial or OWC RAM, the problems went away.

OWC has been my single RAM source for the many Macs in our family plus a number of Macs I maintain for others. In the 12+ years I have been ordering from OWC I have never received anything that did not work perfectly.
